Whenever its technology presents it with a range of options,
a society's beliefs and values--the core elements of ideology--come into
play...Sometimes, however, ideologies do have a substantial effect, as
when they dispose people to accept and even welcome change or, conversely,
to view it negatively. Western capitalism, for example, is far more
supportive of new ideas and innovations of all kinds than is Islamic fundamentalism
(1991, p. 62).
